SKN Assumes Escazú Presidency at COP4

BASSETERRE – St. Kitts and Nevis has assumed the presidency of the Escazu Agreement, taking on a significant leadership position in regional environmental matters.

The handover took place during the fourth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Escazu Agreement, held in the Bahamas from April 21st to 24th.

The Escazu Agreement is the first legally binding treaty in Latin America and the Caribbean focused on environmental rights. It promotes access to information, public participation, and access to justice in environmental decision-making processes.

In assuming the presidency, St. Kitts and Nevis reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening regional cooperation and advancing sustainable development across the Caribbean.

Representing the Federation, Director of Environment Derrione Edmeade, stressed the urgency of collective action. He described environmental protection as essential to the region’s future and highlighted the need to protect environmental defenders, build climate resilience, and ensure that vulnerable communities have a stronger voice in environmental matters.

The Federation stated that it will use its term as president to promote greater public involvement in environmental governance and to push for meaningful progress on climate and sustainability issues affecting small island developing states.

This leadership role marks an important milestone for St. Kitts and Nevis on the regional stage, demonstrating the country’s growing commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable development.
