Fire Service Prepares for Electric Vehicle Fires

BASSETERRE – The St. Kitts and Nevis Fire and Rescue Service is taking proactive steps to prepare for emergencies involving electric vehicles as the vehicles become more prevalent across the federation. Acting Deputy Chief Timothy Martin said the department has enrolled officers in specialized training programs and is planning to acquire equipment designed specifically to combat EV fires.

To stay ahead of the emerging challenge, officers from the maintenance unit and station commanders completed training at the technical college, where they studied how electric vehicles operate and the methods required to extinguish EV-related fires.

“So we had some of our officers enrolled in a program designed to educate them about EV vehicles,” Martin said. “The persons in the maintenance unit and also a station officer were able to go off to the technical college and they had a number of weeks there in terms of training to learn about these vehicles, how they operate, and the way in which they can be extinguished.”

Martin himself attended the Caribbean Association of Fire Chiefs conference, where he gained additional insights from international fire management experts dealing with electric vehicle emergencies. The training underscored a critical challenge: EV fires can burn for extended periods, sometimes lasting for weeks.

“One of those vehicles can actually burn for weeks,” Martin noted. “We are looking to get some of these equipment whether it is a certain type of foam that can be used to arrest these fires very quickly because EV fires they can last for a very long time.”

The Fire and Rescue Service’s investment in training and specialized equipment reflects a forward-thinking approach to emergency preparedness as the federation transitions toward increased adoption of electric vehicles.
