Bridgetown, Barbados, June 30, 2020 (Barbados TODAY): Guyanese national Chabinauth has been remanded to the Psychiatric Hospital for his “own protection”.
The 53-year-old, who only had that one name on the charge sheet, resides at Green Park Lane, St Michael is accused of unlawfully wounding Radjai Persaud on July 8, with intent to maim, disfigure or disable her or do her some serious bodily harm.
He was not required to plead to the indictable charge.
Prosecutor Victoria Taitt submitted to the District ‘A’ Magistrates’ Court that Chabinauth arrived in the country back in February and was granted a six-month stay as a visitor.
She stated that an aggravating factor of the case was the fact that Chabinauth had been hospitalized at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. Correspondence received from the hospital revealed that the accused had “self inflicted” lacerations to his throat and larynx. Health officials there were unable to ascertain his mental state and recommended that doctors at a mental health facility assess him.
Officer Taitt said there was a recommendation that there was a need to protect the accused from himself and the complainant from him.
Magistrate Douglas Frederick informed the accused, who was wearing a medical device around his throat, of the objections and the recommendation that he be remanded to a mental health institution. When he tried to speak he was barely audible but nodded.
Chabinauth will reappear in the District ‘A’ Magistrates’ Court on August 19.
