BASSETERRE — The St. Kitts and Nevis Defence Force Coast Guard has successfully rescued a local fishing vessel and its crew after it encountered difficulties at sea near Nevis.
The incident occurred on Monday, April 20, when a distress alert was received from the Antigua and Barbuda Defence Force Coast Guard at approximately 1:37 p.m. The vessel, identified as FV Lady Medisha, was reported to be in distress about five nautical miles southeast of Nevis.
Coast Guard personnel responded promptly, locating the vessel and assessing the situation before initiating recovery efforts. The distressed boat was subsequently towed safely to Charlestown, where it was scheduled to undergo inspection and necessary repairs.
Authorities confirmed that all three individuals on board were accounted for and no injuries were reported.
Officials say the successful operation underscores the effectiveness of coordinated regional response efforts and highlights the importance of ongoing collaboration between Caribbean maritime agencies.
The Coast Guard also reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring safety at sea, noting that rapid response capabilities remain a critical component of national security and emergency preparedness.
Maritime officials are encouraging vessel operators to continue adhering to safety protocols and to ensure that all communication equipment is functional when heading out to sea.
