Government Details Major Progress on Infrastructure

BASSETERRE — Water security, renewable energy, road improvements, and digital transformation initiatives are taking shape across St. Kitts and Nevis, according to a comprehensive progress report presented Tuesday by heads of various government departments and agencies. Hon. Konris Maynard, Minister of Public Infrastructure, Energy, Utilities, Domestic Transport, ICT, and Post, led the briefing on work advancing across the ministries’ four sectors.

The St. Kitts Water Services Department highlighted key investments aimed at bolstering the nation’s water supply. The Basseterre Desalination Plant, groundwater development initiatives, new pipeline and pump installations, and storage improvements are underway. The department is also focusing efforts on increasing water supply to communities such as St. Peter’s.

Energy transition remains a cornerstone of the government’s infrastructure strategy. The Energy Unit and SKELEC — St. Kitts Electricity Co. Ltd — reported progress on renewable energy programs including Solarise and DRIVE, as well as the proposed 50-megawatt solar photovoltaic project with battery storage. Grid upgrades, electric vehicle incentives, and measures to reduce dependence on fossil fuels are also moving forward.

The Public Works Department provided updates on multiple infrastructure projects. Road rehabilitation and new road construction are ongoing, with upgrades at the quarry also in progress. The Joshua Obadiah Williams Primary School reconstruction project continues, while upcoming works include the Lime Kiln Playfield Pavilion.

Digital transformation is advancing on multiple fronts. The Digital Transformation Unit reported progress on e-ID systems, civil registry modernization, the National Addressing System, and improved digital services designed to support public service delivery, emergency response, and national planning. The St. Kitts and Nevis Postal Services also outlined its role in these modernization efforts.

Connectivity improvements continue as essential infrastructure. The Cable St. Kitts presented updates on fiber deployment, network upgrades at Cockleshell Bay, enhanced network reliability, and support for public safety infrastructure. The company is working to strengthen digital access across the island.

According to the report, these efforts reflect continued investment in practical solutions, stronger infrastructure, improved services, and long-term resilience for residents across the federation.
