SKN Mourns Cultural Icon King Ellie Matt

BASSETERRE – The Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis is in mourning the death of celebrated cultural icon, Elston Nero, better known as King Ellie Matt, who passed away on Sunday.

Ellie Matt was a towering figure on the local calypso scene and a pioneer in bringing the music of St. Kitts and Nevis to international audiences. He led the highly acclaimed band Ellie Matt and the GI’s Brass which helped showcase Kittitian calypso and soca music on the global stage.

A dominant force in calypso for decades, King Ellie Matt won the prestigious Calypso Monarch title a record 10 times and was crowned Road March Champion on seven occasions. His powerful performances, witty lyrics, and energetic stage presence earned him widespread admiration both at home and across the Caribbean.

The St. Kitts and Nevis Carnival Committee described the fallen icon as “not only a remarkable musician but a true icon of Caribbean culture.” In a statement, the committee noted that his legacy will continue to inspire generations of musicians and fans for years to come.
