Basseterre, St. Kitts, April 14, 2020 (ZIZ News): Director of the Water Services Department (WSD) in St. Kitts, Charles Parris is reminding the people of St. Kitts and Nevis of how important water conservation is during the twin island federation’s COVID-19 State of Emergency.

The Director’s reminder comes at a time when he says there has been an increase in water usage since the government implemented a 24hr lockdown on Thursday April 9 at 7:01 pm.

During Monday’s NEOC briefing, he said that the Water Services Department is aware that using soap and water for hand hygiene is a key recommendation by health experts to protect against contracting the virus but advised that the water should not be wasted.

<<VTR>> “Stand with us as we fight COVID-19, to remain conscious of how we use water. When you are at home do not allow the tap to run for any longer than it has to. Instead of full bore from the tap, you could reduce the flow when washing your hands so even if the tap must run while you’re washing your hands it doesn’t run at full flow. Twenty seconds at full [flow] that’s almost 1.5 litres of water that can go. If it is reduced, probably an 8-ounce glass can do the same task”, Parris explained.

Mr. Parris also addressed the associated challenges that come with reduced rainfall. Reduced rainfall means that sources of potable water such as aquifers and springs will be negatively impacted and will therefore prompt the beginning of water rationing.

He said residents of Saddlers, Dieppe Bay and Lodge have already experienced the effects of water rationing during the lockdown.

Residents were also encouraged to recycle water where possible by using storage containers to complete daily tasks like washing dishes and watering plants. He said the washing of cars is being discouraged at this time.

The Director then revealed that the St. Kitts Water Services Department (WSD) has established a 24/7 hotline where persons can call to report any water-related issues.

Callers will be able to speak directly to a representative via 762-0099.
