New Groundwater Sources Identified

BASSETERRE: The Government of Saint Kitts and Nevis has successfully completed a semi-airborne drone survey to identify new groundwater sources, yielding promising results for the island’s water security.

The comprehensive report from the survey conducted across Saint Kitts was presented to the Water Services Department on October 6, 2025. During the sitting of the National Assembly on Friday, October 17, 2025, Minister of Public Infrastructure, the Honourable Konris Maynard stated that the survey has identified sites with the potential to provide potable water that is safe for consumption.

The identified sites span multiple locations across the island. One site is located in Cayon, two in Molineux, two in Tabernacle, one at Bellevue, and two at Fountain. Additional sites were found between Sandy Bay and Phillips Bay, one at St. Pauls, one in Newton Ground, three sites in Sandy Point, one in Stone Fort, one in Old Road, and another in Challengers.

Minister Maynard emphasized the methodical approach to developing these resources. “We intend to pick the first best 10 of those sites so we go through the report to identify which ones are suited from the hydro-geological capability,” he stated. The sorted list has been sent to the Water Services Department, which is assessing the Western and Northern sections of the island to maximize groundwater resources.

While assessment and testing continues, work is set to begin on the two-million-gallon Desolination Plant this year. Minister Maynard confirmed that the Ministry has adopted a proactive approach by advancing procurement processes to contract a driller for the new potable water pipe expected from the hydrological survey. The contract for Civil Works Services Ltd. out of Trinidad and Tobago was signed on September 22, 2025.

Following the hydrological survey report, the contractor received the “Notice to Proceed” on October 1, 2025, with work expected to commence in December 2025.
