Public Health Approach To Crime Showing Results

BASSETERRE: The National Secretariat for Human Security and Well-Being says treating crime as a public health issue is beginning to show results in St. Kitts-Nevis.

In an appearance on In Focus on ZIZ on Wednesday, Programme Director Hance Richards pointed to the significant decline in homicides and other violent crimes as one of the early indicators that the approach is having an impact.

Richards explained that crime is being addressed through a structured framework, focusing on different levels of prevention.

He also noted that while crime carries a significant social and economic cost, early results suggest those costs can be reduced through targeted intervention.

Drawing parallels with the Covid-19 Pandemic, he said the public health approach relies on early intervention, data collection and prevention to deliver long-term results.

The initiative was introduced in 2024 by Minister of National Security and Health, Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Terrance Drew, marking a shift toward a strategy that combines law enforcement with prevention, social support and public health principles.
