Search for Victims of Dominica Plane Crash Called Off

ROSEAU, Dominica, Thursday February 20, 2020 – A mission to find four French citizens who were on a small plane that crashed in Dominica’s waters on Sunday has failed, with authorities calling off the search after only finding plane parts and passengers’ personal effects.

A statement issued by the prefecture for Guadeloupe indicated that after hours of searching “in difficult weather conditions, there is unfortunately no more hope to find survivors.”

“The search conditions are made difficult with strong winds and rough seas causing poor visibility due to frequent squalls,” it said. “Despite substantial measures, the search team have only found some of the passengers’ personal belongings and parts of a plane.”

The four people – a 40-year-old man, a couple and their 16-year-old son – were on the privately-owned, French-registered Piper F-OGKO en route to Guadeloupe when it went down in the waters on the northeastern coast of Dominica around 7 p.m. on Sunday, shortly after taking off from the Douglas Charles Airport.

Parts of a landing gear, believed to be from the missing aircraft, were found by a search team.

A backpack with the passport of one of the people on the plane, and a bag with the flight plan were also found.
