30 dead, 24 Critical After Bangkok Bar Fire

The death toll from the fire at a Bangkok bar has risen to 30, with 24 of the injured still in critical condition.

More than 70 people were injured when the blaze swept through the Rong Beer Na Ladprao Bar shortly before midnight on Sunday.

The fire, Bangkok’s deadliest in 17 years, took firefighters about 30 minutes to bring under control.

Police say most of those killed were found trapped in windowless bathrooms, where they may have sought shelter from the flames.

Investigators are working to determine the cause of the fire and whether the bar complied with safety regulations.

Bangkok’s governor has also ordered a wider inspection of similar establishments, along with stronger enforcement of existing safety laws.

Relatives of the victims are continuing the difficult process of identifying and collecting the bodies of their loved ones.
