Christa Pike Remains Unconscious After Failed Tennessee Execution

Christa Pike, Tennessee’s only woman on death row, remained unconscious and on a ventilator after the state’s failed attempt to execute her by lethal injection on September 30. Her attorneys said she was in critical condition, while Tennessee officials launched an independent review and indefinitely postponed further executions.

Pike was scheduled to be executed at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in Nashville for the 1995 murder of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer, a classmate she and her boyfriend tortured and killed when Pike was 18.

According to court filings by Pike’s lawyers, the execution team spent roughly an hour attempting to administer the lethal-injection drugs. Two doses of pentobarbital were reportedly given, but neither caused her death. Her attorneys said Pike remained alive and was audibly snoring after the procedure was halted.

She was taken by ambulance to a Nashville hospital, where she was intubated and placed on a ventilator. Her attorneys said hospital staff were attempting to clear the drugs from her body and that both arms were swollen, burned and blistered when she arrived.

Pike’s lawyers believe the execution may have failed because the intravenous lines were improperly placed or because the veins “blew,” preventing the pentobarbital from entering her bloodstream as intended.

They alleged that the execution team did not recognise the problem before administering a second dose. State officials had not publicly offered a detailed explanation of what went wrong as of the latest reports.

Pike’s attorneys have asked a state court to require the Tennessee Department of Correction to preserve evidence from the execution, including the IV equipment and other records. They said the evidence is necessary to determine what happened and to protect Pike’s legal rights.

Gov. Bill Lee ordered an independent review of the execution procedures and postponed Pike’s execution indefinitely. He also halted the remaining scheduled execution in Tennessee for the year while officials investigate the incident.

The failure has renewed scrutiny of Tennessee’s death-penalty procedures. In 2022, the state stopped the execution of Oscar Smith after discovering problems related to its lethal-injection drugs. A subsequent review found that Tennessee had not followed its own drug-testing procedures since revising its execution protocol in 2018.

Lawmakers and death-penalty opponents are now calling for answers about the state’s equipment, staffing, medical procedures and choice of execution method.

Pike’s death sentence has not been overturned. The failed execution also does not automatically convert her sentence to life in prison, leaving her legal position uncertain while the investigation and related court proceedings continue.

Her medical condition could complicate any future attempt to carry out the sentence. The New York Times reported that legal experts questioned whether Tennessee could lawfully attempt another execution after the physical injuries and medical complications described by her attorneys.

Pike’s lawyers have sought clemency and argued that she was a teenager with significant mental-health issues at the time of the crime. Pike was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder, according to her attorneys. In an earlier clemency petition, she acknowledged responsibility for Slemmer’s death and expressed remorse.

May Martinez, Slemmer’s mother, said the failed execution left her without the resolution she had expected after more than three decades.

“I didn’t get justice for my daughter,” Martinez said, according to The Associated Press.

The case has consequently intensified debate on both sides of the death-penalty issue. Pike’s attorneys and opponents of capital punishment have described the episode as evidence of a dangerous and flawed process. Slemmer’s family and some supporters of the sentence have focused instead on the continuing impact of the 1995 murder.

As of the latest available reports, Pike remained hospitalized and unconscious, Tennessee’s execution schedule was suspended, and officials had not released a final explanation for why the lethal-injection attempt failed.
