St. Kitts-Nevis Celebrates Bernice Sebastian’s 112th Birthday

Today, September 21, 2025, the people of St. Kitts and Nevis proudly honour Bernice Rosalind Eugenie Sebastian, a national treasure, on her 112th birthday.

Born in Basseterre in 1913, Miss Bernice is not only a beloved daughter of our nation but also the oldest living resident of Philadelphia, USA, where she now resides.

The daughter of Joseph Matthew Sebastian, a Labour movement pioneer who fought for fair wages, safe working conditions, and education for Kittitians and Nevisians, Bernice carried forward his legacy as a dedicated educator. She inspired generations of students at Basseterre Boys’ School, Dieppe Bay Infant School, and Irish Town School, shaping the minds and futures of our youth.

Bernice’s deep roots in St. Kitts and Nevis are reflected in her family’s contributions to our nation. She is the sister of the late Sir Cuthbert Sebastian, former Governor-General, and the aunt of Ermelin Sebastian, Attorney and Chairman of the St. Kitts Tourism Authority, who is married to Minister of Agriculture The Hon. Samal Duggins.

For her lifelong service, Bernice was awarded the prestigious Saint Kitts and Nevis Medal of Honour, presented by her brother during his time as Governor-General.

As we celebrate Miss Bernice’s remarkable life, St. Kitts and Nevis salutes her enduring spirit and contributions to our nation’s history.
