Panama Downs Sugar Girlz 3-0 at Home
Goalkeeper Sutton stands tall, but second-half goals seal defeat for SKN
BASSETERRE: Panama proved too strong for the Sugar Girlz on home soil Wednesday night, claiming a 3-0 victory at the National Bank Group Technical Center to advance their CONCACAF Women’s Qualifiers campaign. A goalless first half gave SKN fans hope, but Panama’s clinical finishing in the second period ultimately ended the contest.
For the opening 45 minutes, goalkeeper Craivecia Sutton — called into action early after Quinn Josiah was forced off injured in the 28th minute — delivered a commanding display. Sutton denied Wendy Natis with a stunning fingertip save from more than 35 yards, and twice saw Panama rattle the crossbar before the interval. SKN held firm heading into the break.
The dam broke in the 53rd minute when Rebeca Espinosa headed home from close range, assisted by Karla Riley’s cross following a corner. Three minutes later, Riley Tanner doubled Panama’s lead with a towering header to the top right corner. Schiandra González added a third deep in stoppage time, finishing cleanly from outside the box to complete the scoreline.
The Sugar Girlz were not without fight. Christi-Anne Mills tested Panama goalkeeper Farissa Córdoba with a left-footed effort from range in the 81st minute, while Myesha Rawlins also tested the defence. Sherema Blake’s direct free kick from distance in the 61st minute sailed just high. But clear-cut chances were rare as Panama’s midfield controlled the tempo.
Yellow cards were shown to Ella Richardson and Jasmine Mulraine-Allen for SKN, with Panama’s Sherline King and Carina Baltrip-Reyes also cautioned. Injuries disrupted the flow of both halves, but SKN showed commendable resilience each time they were reduced to firefighting.
The defeat leaves the Sugar Girlz searching for their first win of this qualifying round after going 2-1 down to Aruba and drawing 2-2 with Cuba in previous outings. Despite the scoreline, Sutton’s heroics in goal and moments of attacking intent suggest Coach Earl Jones’s rebuilding project is progressing, even if results have yet to follow.
