Government Highlights Water, Energy And Food Security Progress
BASSETERRE: A new Government achievements report is highlighting major investments in water, agriculture, energy and environmental protection over the past four years.
The report, which covers the period August 2022 to July 2026, details a range of projects and initiatives implemented under the sustainable island state agenda.
More than 700 farmers received irrigation systems, solar pumps, water tanks and other support, while crop production increased across several key commodities.
The report also highlights a $50million-investment in water security, including new desalination plants in Basseterre and the Canada Industrial Site, as well as a new water well at Cabbage Tree in Cayon.
It also details more than $63 million spent to stabilise the cost of electricity, the introduction of the solarise net billing programme, tax incentives for solar energy systems, and reduced import duties on electric vehicles.
The report further highlighted the plastic waste reduction act, expanded recycling initiatives, coastal protection projects, sargassum management and other environmental programmes.
Together, the projects represent some of the key initiatives undertaken over the past four years to strengthen the country’s water, energy, food security and environmental resilience.
