Coconut Seedlings Distributed to Farmers in Push to Revive Industry
BASSETERRE — The Department of Agriculture distributed coconut seedlings to farmers across St. Kitts on Friday, part of a new push to rebuild an industry that once supplied fresh coconut water, jelly, oils and crafts across the Federation.
The distribution ceremony took place at the Department’s La Guerite Office and was supported by the Caribbean Agricultural Research and Development Institute (CARDI), which is backing the effort to expand coconut production and strengthen sustainable agriculture in St. Kitts and Nevis.
Director of Agriculture Stuart Versailles and CARDI Representative Brontie Tucker addressed farmers at the ceremony, emphasizing the importance of building local agricultural capacity and supporting the nation’s farming community.
The handout came with more than seedlings. Farmers who attended also took part in a hands-on training session covering coconut propagation, agronomy, and pest and disease management, aimed at helping them grow the young trees into a sustainable, income-generating industry.
Officials say the initiative is part of a broader drive toward food security and a more resilient agricultural sector, with the coconut trees planted Friday expected to benefit the Federation for generations to come.
The coconut was once a staple of daily life in St. Kitts and Nevis, and the Department of Agriculture is hoping Friday’s distribution marks the beginning of its return to local farms and livelihoods.
