Off-Duty SKNDF Soldier Stabbed Intervening in Newtown Scuffle

BASSETERRE — An off-duty soldier of the St. Kitts-Nevis Defence Force (SKNDF) was stabbed Saturday night in the Newtown area while trying to break up a scuffle involving several young people, the Force confirmed Monday.

In a media release issued Monday morning, the SKNDF said the incident occurred on Saturday, October 3. The soldier, a member of the SKNDF Band, was transported to the Joseph N. France General Hospital, where he underwent an emergency operation. The Force said he remains in stable condition.

According to the release, the soldier was in the area socializing with members of the Nu Vybes Band, as he regularly does. During the evening, he observed the scuffle and attempted to intervene and separate those involved. It was during that intervention that he was stabbed.

The SKNDF said it is aware of the circumstances surrounding the incident and has provided relevant information to the appropriate authorities. The Force said the investigation remains ongoing. The release did not say whether anyone has been arrested or charged, and it did not identify the soldier.

The Force extended its support to the soldier and his family and wished him a full and speedy recovery. It also commended his courage, commitment and sense of duty, saying his actions “reflect the values expected of our service members, even when they are not on official duty.”

The SKNDF added that it remains committed to public safety and security and is working closely with relevant stakeholders and security partners to support safe and orderly events.
