Bandit kills cop in Guyana during escape bid

GEORGETOWN, Guyana (CMC) A 27-year-old detective was shot and killed by a suspected bandit who escaped police custody at the Georgetown Public Hospital on Monday night.

A police statement said that Corporal Seburn Elias was shot in the abdomen during a scuffle with the man, as he attempted to retrieve a firearm from the suspect.

Police said that the suspect had earlier managed to escape from police custody after disarming a police officer at the hospital.

The man had asked to use the washroom and while he was being escorted there was able to disarm the police officer.

The suspect had earlier been arrested by public-spirited persons and handed over to the police following an alleged break in at a house in the capital. He was taken to the hospital for treatment after he was reportedly beaten by the residents before he was handed over to the police.

Police said they have since launched an investigation into the circumstances leading to the suspect’s escape and the subsequent killing of the detective.
