Cabinet, ambassadors launch school visits; sneaker day marked

BASSETERRE — Members of the Federal Cabinet and diplomatic ambassadors began the annual Independence School Visits on Thursday, touring primary schools and early childhood centres across the Federation as part of this year’s 43rd anniversary of Independence celebrations.

The visits give national leaders and representatives a chance to connect with the country’s youngest citizens, share in the spirit of Independence, and engage directly with students and educators. The programme is a recurring feature of the Independence season, timed to reach schoolchildren before the anniversary itself on Sept. 19.

Separately, the Independence Committee marked National Sneaker Day today, encouraging residents to swap formal shoes for sneakers at work and get moving. The initiative is meant to promote healthier lifestyles and make physical activity part of people’s daily routines, with organizers framing it as a simple, enjoyable way to stay active.

Residents were invited to share photos of themselves in their sneakers on social media using the hashtag #NationalSneakerDaySKN as part of the observance.

Both events form part of the broader calendar marking Saint Kitts and Nevis’ 43rd year of Independence, which continues through October with a mix of government, cultural, sporting and community programming leading up to and beyond Independence Day.
