ST. KITTS, APRIL 9TH 2010 (CUOPM) – Newly-appointed Senior Minister and Minister of International Trade, Industry, Commerce, Agriculture, Marine Resources, Consumer Affairs and Constituency Empowerment, Dr. the Hon. Timothy Harris, has recommended a new structure for the Department of Marine Resources.

During the recent Cabinet Meeting, Minister Harris cited the need to properly manage the Federation’s marine resources given the increasing pressure on those resources from natural and man-made sources.

Dr. Harris submitted that proper management of the marine resources can yield numerous financial, social and cultural benefits including expanded supplies of fish, shipbuilding, tourism, research, and aquaculture bio-prospecting.

Cabinet has approved the new structure but expected a phased implementation over a number of years since all the resources, financial and human, were not immediately available for its full implementation.
