Culturama highlighted in Federation’s Tourism Magazine

NEVIS…June 15, 2010) – Culturama is the focus of the St. Kitts- Nevis Preview Magazine 2010.

The magazine is a collection of articles, advertisements and pictures which highlights the many areas of interest to tourists visiting St. Kitts and Nevis.

The piece in the magazine on Culturama discussed the festival in Nevis from its early days in the 70’s when the Nevis Dramatic and Cultural Society designed the celebration to highlight the island’s dynamic Arts and Culture scene.

The magazine also looked at how organizers took into account that most Nevisians were of African descent and thus the decision to have Culturama coincide with Emancipation Day celebrations. Thirty six years later, Culturama according to the article, remained a not to be missed island tradition.

The article also outlined two of the more popular events, the Calypso competition and the Miss Culture Queen contest. Last year’s winner of the Miss Culture Queen Competition, Miss Masinda Nisbett earned a total of 2, 060 points and was judged in swimwear, talent, costume and the eveningwear categories.

The Nevis Calypso competition was described in the article as one steeped in tradition, as “kaiso” was a major player in Nevis’ culture. It also addressed the 2009 Calypso Monach Mr. Calvin Johnson (I Sour Sop) who was the first Kittian in its history to capture the Nevisian Senior Kaiso crown.

Antonio Liburd, Executive Director of Culturama said Culturama 2009 surpassed the Culturama Department’s expectations because they did not anticipate the level of support and participation received due to the crunch in the economy. “We look towards 2010 with greater anticipation and expectation,” he said.
