Knight Riders Edge Patriots in Rain-Hit Opener
BASSETERRE — Trinbago Knight Riders opened their Caribbean Premier League title defense with a 19-run, DLS-adjusted win over the Saint Kitts and Nevis Patriots on Saturday, as Sunil Narine’s early spin burst and a rain-shortened chase decided the contest.
Narine took 3/7, dismissing three international batsmen including Kyle Mayers with the first ball of his spell, to restrict the Patriots to 109/9. The Patriots slipped to 16/3 before Kevin Wickham’s 38 helped steady the innings, though regular wickets from Terrence Hinds kept the total below par.
Overseas batsmen Alex Hales and Colin Munro struggled to accelerate in the Knight Riders’ reply, both falling inside the powerplay. Hales made 9 off 11 balls against Jason Holder, and Munro managed 17 off as many deliveries.
The innings was rebuilt by West Indies international Joshua da Silva and Matthew Breetzke, who occupied the crease to steady the chase. Da Silva retired hurt on 18 off 22 balls after appearing to be in visible pain, a move that did not count against the team’s wickets tally. Breetzke finished unbeaten on a run-a-ball 35.
Rain returned for a second time with the Knight Riders at 94/2 after 15 overs, needing 16 runs from five overs to complete the match. The Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method confirmed Trinbago Knight Riders as winners by 19 runs, with the par score set at 75 and the Knight Riders having lost only two wickets.
The result gives Trinbago Knight Riders an early advantage in their title defense, while the Patriots will look to regroup as the Caribbean Premier League season continues.
