Man Shot Close at Antigua Political Event
St. John’s, Antigua – A 28-year-old man was shot and hospitalized after gunfire erupted near a major campaign event of the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party (ALP) on Sunday morning, just three days before the country heads to the polls.
The shooting took place shortly after 1:00 a.m. along Queen Elizabeth Highway, in the vicinity of the Rising Sun Grounds where the ALP was holding its “Red and Ready” concert. A large crowd had gathered for the event at the time.
According to police reports, a silver motor car traveling along the highway opened fire, striking the man from Grace Farm. Several parked vehicles were also hit by bullets.
The victim was rushed to hospital where he is receiving treatment. Two male suspects have since been arrested, and police recovered a firearm along with spent shells from the scene.
Authorities have moved quickly to clarify that the incident was neither gang-related nor politically motivated, and stressed that it had no direct connection to the ALP campaign event itself.
The shooting has nonetheless raised concerns as Antigua and Barbuda prepares for its general election scheduled for April 30th.
Police investigations are ongoing, and further updates are expected as more details emerge.
