Nationals in Leeds remember the MV Christena

ZIZ Newsroom…Basseterre, Aug 1 2010 – On Sunday the St. Kitts And Nevis Association in Leeds was honouring those who died in the Christena disaster, during a commemorative service.

The association is commemorating the 40th anniversary of the tragedy.

Association president, Sylvester Leader said as one of the largest concentrated Kittitian and Nevisian populations outside of the federation, they feel that they owe it to the families of those who lost their lives on that day almost 40 years ago.

He said the theme of the commemoration is “Tragedy, Challenge, Hope And Triumph” and a special booklet would be distributed to mark the occasion.

The commemorative service was held at St. Aidans Anglican Church.

The Christena, an inter-island ferry, sank on Saturday August 1st 1970 off Nags Head, St. Kitts at 4:10 p.m. 233 persons died. 99 persons survived.
