New “PC” Plates Introduced Amid Registration Shortage
BASSETERRE — The Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force has introduced “PC” as a new vehicle registration series, the Traffic Department announced, as the twin-island federation runs low on available registration numbers amid steady growth in the vehicle fleet.
The Traffic Department said the new letter combination will allow registration of motor vehicles to continue uninterrupted. Officials stressed that existing registration numbers remain valid and will not be affected by the change.
“This measure will facilitate the continued registration of motor vehicles,” the department said in its announcement, thanking the public for its understanding and cooperation.
The announcement drew a range of reactions from residents on social media, with several questioning how the Traffic Department arrived at its current numbering shortage and offering alternative fixes.
One resident argued the possibilities within the existing format had not been exhausted, listing a string of unused combinations and writing that “numbers are infinite.”
Another suggested the department first reclaim registration numbers from vehicles that have been off the road for years, or charge owners to retain inactive plates, adding: “I hope they have exhausted all of the searches before this decision was taken.”
A third resident proposed a more sweeping change, floating separate prefixes — NP or PN for Nevis and SK for St. Kitts — to make clear which island a vehicle is registered on, saying the idea had been raised with police “on numerous occasions” without success.
But in a follow-up comment, that same resident acknowledged a drawback to their own proposal: island-specific plates could make vehicles easily identifiable as belonging to St. Kitts or Nevis, raising the risk that a car could be targeted or vandalized simply because of where its owner is from.
The Traffic Department’s announcement did not indicate how many “PC” registrations have been issued to date or how long the previous series is expected to last under the new system.
