New Pier to improve service standard at Port Zante Marina

ZIZ News…October 21, 2010 – Another pier will soon adorn the landscape at Port Zante.

According to a release the Urban Development Corporation continues to develop the Port Zante Marina adding greater value to services and improving competitiveness.

In process is the construction of a new pier being installed by local company Saint Kitts Marine Works. Mr. Keith Phillip, the general manager of the Urban Development Corporation, operator of Port Zante and its marina, told SKNIS that the marina business in the Leeward Islands is increasingly competitive, and it is important that the Port Zante Marina provides quality services, from front desk operations to security, water, electricity and fuel supplies.

Mr. Phillip indicated that the new pier would primarily serve cruise ship tenders and the increased traffic expected with the opening of the Four Seasons Resort on Nevis.

The new pier may also serve local ferries when sea conditions do not permit them to dock at the Ferry Terminal.

Local company St. Kitts Marine Works has been installing the new pier at the Port Zante Marina, which would enable the facility to handle expected increases in traffic.

Speaking to SKNIS, Mr. Regiwell Francis, director of Saint Kitts Marine Works, said the new pier is the first of its kind in the marina using pre-stressed concrete pilings and caps made by Domus in Antigua. The completed pier would be 60 feet long by 10 feet wide.

Mr. Francis said the company has 42 full-time local employees and has worked on several significant projects in the Federation.
