Newtown, St. Paul’s Share Top After Week Two
BASSETERRE — Honda Newtown United and SL Horsford St. Paul’s United sit alone atop the SKNFA/National Bank Group Premier League table after Week Two, both unbeaten with six points, while defending champions MFCR Old Road United Jets remain without a point through two matches following Sunday’s 1-0 loss to St. Paul’s.
Jahlyan Burt’s 51st-minute goal was enough to sink Old Road at the National Bank Group Technical Center, handing the champions — unbeaten for 16 straight matches to close last season — their second straight defeat to open the new campaign. Old Road has yet to score through two matches and sits eighth in the early standings.
Newtown United made it back-to-back wins Saturday, beating SKELEC Garden Hotspurs 2-0 on an own goal from Marvin Mc Sheen in the 9th minute and a Hazon Marshall strike in the 76th. The result follows Newtown’s Week One upset of Old Road and leaves Garden Hotspurs winless and still searching for their first goal of the season.
Development Bank St. Peters FC picked up its first win of the campaign Sunday, routing 607 Construction Lodge Patriots 5-1 behind goals from Shaheem Prentice, a Rocco Browne brace and two quick strikes from substitute Kemenl French. Lodge Patriots, who also lost their opener 5-1 to TGE Dieppe Bay Eagles, remain winless and at the bottom of the table.
TGE Dieppe Bay Eagles saw their perfect start checked Friday night, playing to a 2-2 draw with SOL Island Auto Conaree FC. Errol O’Loughlin scored twice for Conaree, while Lyandre Williams — who scored a hat trick in Week One — answered with a brace to salvage a point for the Eagles.
The weekend’s wildest finish came at the National Bank Group Technical Center, where Rams Village Superstars and Azul Cayon Rockets played to a 2-2 draw after both sides had a player sent off inside the first 15 minutes. Evansroy Barnes put Cayon ahead before the break, GVaune Amory leveled and Yohannes Mitchum restored Cayon’s lead, before substitute Ber-Nell Hobson converted a penalty in the 70th minute to earn Village a point.
Newtown United and St. Paul’s United lead the table on six points apiece, both without conceding a goal through two matches. Dieppe Bay Eagles, Village Superstars and St. Peters FC follow on four points each. Cayon Rockets sit sixth with two points, and Conaree FC hold seventh with one. Old Road United Jets, Garden Hotspurs and Lodge Patriots round out the table without a point, with Old Road and Garden Hotspurs both yet to score.
