Newtown United Off to Perfect Start, Yet to Concede Through Three Matches
BASSETERRE — Honda Newtown United have opened the 2026-’27 SKNFA/National Bank Group Premier League season exactly the way a title contender should: three matches, three wins, and not a single goal allowed.
The run began where few expected it Week One, with a 2-0 upset of defending champions MFCR Old Road United Jets — the club that had gone unbeaten through all of 2025-’26 on its way to the title. Jean Wolf Edouard broke through in the 9th minute, and Rene Junior Clerveaux Francois doubled the lead in the 53rd, handing Old Road their first defeat in recent memory and putting Newtown level atop the table with three other clubs after the opening weekend.
Week Two brought a tighter, but no less clinical, follow-up. Newtown beat SKELEC Garden Hotspurs 2-0, with an own goal from Marvin Mc Sheen in the 9th minute and a Hazon Marshall strike in the 76th sealing back-to-back shutout wins. The result moved Newtown level with SL Horsford St. Paul’s United atop the standings, both unbeaten with six points.
Match Week Three delivered the emphatic statement. Newtown routed Azul Cayon Rockets 4-0 on September 18, with Jean Wolf Edouard opening the scoring again in the 26th minute before Elandre Govia (79′), Keon Battice (82′) and Tulmul Nisbett (90+1′) pulled away in a three-goal second-half burst. The win kept Newtown perfect through three matches and pushed their season tally to eight goals scored without a single one conceded.
That clean-sheet run is currently the best defensive record in the league, and it’s paired with an attack that has found the net in every match. Newtown sit atop the table on nine points, level with St. Paul’s United on points but ahead on goal difference, +8 to St. Paul’s +7.
The early form continues a strong recent stretch for the club. Newtown finished as runners-up in last season’s regular-season standings behind Old Road and qualified for the Final Four playoffs alongside the Jets, Azul Cayon Rockets and Development Bank St. Peters FC. Three matches into the new campaign, they look like a club picking up right where last season left off — only this time, they’re the ones setting the pace instead of chasing it.
Newtown will look to protect both the unbeaten record and the clean-sheet streak as Match Week Four approaches, with the rest of the table — St. Paul’s United foremost among them — still to be tested.
