PM Drew Pays Tribute to Calypso Legend Sparrow

BASSETERRE — Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew has paid tribute to calypso legend Dr. Slinger Francisco, the Mighty Sparrow, who died Sunday in New York at age 91, describing him as a son of the Caribbean whose music carried the region’s stories to the world.

In a statement, Dr. Drew said Sparrow’s songs conveyed the region’s laughter, struggles and dignity to audiences around the globe. He said the calypsonian’s legacy will live on through Caribbean music, Carnival and cultural pride.

The prime minister also recalled Sparrow’s ties to St. Kitts and Nevis, including his performance at the St. Kitts Music Festival in June 2003.

Dr. Drew extended condolences to Sparrow’s family, fellow artistes and the people of Trinidad and Tobago and Grenada.

Sparrow died peacefully after a brief illness, surrounded by family, according to a statement from his relatives.

“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Trinidad and Tobago’s Calypso icon, Slinger Francisco, known to the world as ‘The Mighty Sparrow’,” the family said.

The family remembered him not only as an entertainer but as “a husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, life partner and friend.” They also said Sparrow embraced Christianity in his final days, having “made his election sure” by giving his life to Jesus Christ and being baptised into the Seventh-day Adventist faith.

Widely regarded as one of the greatest calypsonians in history, Sparrow enjoyed a career spanning decades and helped elevate calypso on the international stage. He was known for his powerful voice, sharp songwriting and commanding stage presence, and his catalogue explored politics, social issues, culture and everyday life.

He was also admired as a mentor to generations of performers, and his influence reached well beyond Trinidad and Tobago, earning him respect throughout the Caribbean and the wider world.
