Troops Ready For 43rd Independence Parade
Basseterre (SKNIS): Excitement is building for the 43rd Independence Ceremonial Parade, which takes place today, September 19, 2026, at the Warner Park Cricket Stadium at 6 p.m.
Captain Jervin Lapsey of the St. Kitts-Nevis Defence Force (SKNDF) will lead the armed and unarmed units as the Parade Commander. In addition to the traditional units from the military, police, prison, fire, customs and port security services, and uniformed groups, a contingent from the Guyana Defence Force will feature on the parade. SKNDF re-enactors of the 4th West India Regiment will once again be on display featuring dress from the historical period. The platoon debuted last year.
Captain Lapsey said that he was honoured for the opportunity to lead the parade, eight years since he last served in the role. He indicated that the troops had put in intensive preparation and consider being on the parade square a proud and memorable moment.
The decision by the Independence Planning Committee to host the Anniversary Ceremonial Parade at evenings has been widely hailed by the public and resulted in packed stands. Acting Commander of the St. Kitts-Nevis Defence Force, Major Kayode Sutton, invited everyone to come out and support the troops.
“When soldiers see and know that they are being watched, especially by family members, that always motivates them to put out their best, so we encourage our citizens, residents and visitors to come out and support the troops, cheer them on as they demonstrate their skills on parade,” Major Sutton stated.
Saint Kitts and Nevis gained Independence from Great Britain on September 19, 1983. This year’s celebration is held under the theme “One People, One Vision, Endless Possibility: Independence 43.”
