Tropical Disturbance May Bring Rain Relief
BASSETERRE — A tropical disturbance moving into the Eastern Caribbean could bring much-needed rain to St. Kitts and Nevis and neighboring islands by early next week.
The system is expected to bring scattered showers to Guadeloupe, Dominica, Martinique, St. Lucia, Barbados, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Grenada, and Trinidad and Tobago as it moves through the region this week. Forecast models show the disturbance reaching the northeastern Caribbean, including St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Martin and St. Barts, by Monday, potentially delivering rainfall to areas that have been unusually dry.
Wind shear and dry, dusty air in the atmosphere are expected to limit the system’s strength. The American, Canadian and Icon forecast models show the disturbance becoming a tropical depression, while the European model keeps it as an unclassified tropical disturbance. Nothing at this point showing it becoming a hurricane, although a front approaching from the north could pull the system slightly off course and introduce additional wind shear.
Despite the uncertainty, meteorologists are not in monitor mode. The disturbance is simply an area to watch rather than an immediate threat.
A separate tropical wave near Cabo Verde is also being tracked, but it is not showing signs of significant development in the near term and will be monitored as it moves west-northwest in the coming days.
Saharan dust remains widespread across parts of the region, with reports from the Turks and Caicos Islands, Honduras, the Cayman Islands and Jamaica. Forecasters said the dry air layer is a key factor limiting rapid intensification of tropical systems moving through the basin this week.
Residents across St. Kitts and Nevis are encouraged to monitor updates from local disaster management authorities as the system approaches, even as forecasters stress the greater likelihood at this stage is scattered rainfall rather than a significant storm impact.
