T&T taxi driver dies in police custody

CrimeSceneBPort of Spain, Trinidad (CMC) – An autopsy is expected to be performed Monday on the body of a 30-year-old man, who police said killed himself while in their custody over the weekend.

Police said Kevin Singh committed suicide by slamming himself against the walls of the cell after he was arrested for larceny of a motor vehicle, but relatives are insisting on an investigation claiming that they were even unaware of his arrest.

Police said Singh, a taxi-driver, was placed in a cell by himself on Saturday and when they went to give him lunch he was found motionless. They said the Emergency Health Service (EHS) was later called in and paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene.

Relatives said they were unable to view the body at the Arouca Police station, east of here, and have called on the authorities for a full investigation into the matter.
