Twenty nationals complete General Nursing studies in Cuba

ST. KITTS, SEPTEMBER 27TH 2010 (CUOPM) – The first batch of nationals to be trained as nurses in Cuba has graduated from the University of Medical Sciences of Matanzas. The nurses are expected to commence employment with a six week orientation at the Joseph N. France General Hospital by the first week of October.

Human Resource Manager with responsibility for Training and Development, Ms. Heather Richardson said the 20 nurses were among 23 students from St. Kitts and Nevis who successfully completed their studies in Cuba this year. The other three completed studies in medicine, accounting and early childhood education.

She said the 20 nurses completed their studies in General Nursing and also obtained a Diploma in Spanish and have already met with Human Resources Personnel and officials from the Ministry of Health including the Permanent Secretary, Mr. Elvis Newton as well as representatives from the St. Kitts and Nevis Nurses and Midwives Council.

The students presented copies of their credentials and engaged in discussions surrounding the requirements and expectations of the Nursing Fraternity,” said Ms. Richardson.

She disclosed that the course study included “Basic Nursing, Introduction to Public Health, History of Nursing, Pharmacology, Medical Surgery and Community Nursing, Computer Science in Health, Public Health, Nursing Management, Nursing Bioethics and Ethics, Spanish and Pre-professional practice.

The graduates are Ms. Lesley Hendricks of Sandy Point; Ms. Jennifer James (Saddlers); Ms. Doriseia Joseph (St. Peters); Ms. Teresa Maynard (Mc Knight); Ms. Natasha Mitchum (New Town); Ms. Marilyn Pemberton (Cayon); Ms. Shelomi Pennyfeather (New Road), Mrs. Micheline Phillip-Joseph (Challengers); Ms. Ashley Bedford (Molineux); Ms. Karensa Browne (St. Peter’s); Ms. Amanda Caines (Molineux); Ms. Amanda Delaney (Christ Church); Ms. Delicia Doras (St. Peter’s); Ms. Janaita French (Saddlers); Ms. Danesha Grant (Sandy Point); Ms. Nicole Browne (Sandy Point); Ms. Samantha Browne (Conaree); Ms. Davel Clarke (Christ Church); Ms. Vivienne Green (Molineux) and Ms. Taverlyn Mardenborough (Cayon).

The other graduates are Javed Hughes (Lamberts), Accounting; Dr. Jason Prince (New Town) medicine; and Ms. Nadine Natta (Pond’s Pasture) Early Childhood Education.
