USGS: Strong earthquake hits China’s Xinjiang region

Hong Kong (CNN) — A strong earthquake struck the far western Chinese region of Xinjiang on Wednesday, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The 6.8-magnitude quake hit about 270 kilometers (170 miles) southeast of the city of Hotan at a depth of 12.5 kilometers (7.7 miles), the USGS reported.

There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.
