West Indies Relegated to World Cup Qualifiers

ST. JOHN’S, Antigua — The West Indies will have to compete in the 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Qualifiers after Afghanistan’s victory over Ireland mathematically eliminated the two-time champions from automatic qualification.

Afghanistan’s three-wicket win in the third One-Day International on Monday secured the final direct berth for the 2027 tournament, leaving the West Indies outside the top eight in the ICC ODI rankings with no path to recover before the Sept. 30 cutoff. It marks the third consecutive World Cup cycle in which the regional side must navigate the qualifiers.

Cricket West Indies President Kishore Shallow acknowledged the disappointment but emphasized the team’s recent progress.

“While we are disappointed, the tournament as a whole reflected growth, belief and togetherness,” Shallow said, pointing to the squad’s Super 8 appearance at the 2026 T20 World Cup as evidence of improvement.

Head coach Daren Sammy, who has guided the team through a transitional period, accepted the qualifiers route after a 3-2 ODI series loss to New Zealand in July.

“We know the position we’re in,” Sammy said. “But we also know the quality in this dressing room. We have to play the right cricket and get those wins on the board.”

The setback follows a mixed year for West Indies cricket. The team reached the Super 8s at the T20 World Cup in India before losing to the host nation, and drew a two-match Test series against Pakistan 1-1 after an eight-wicket defeat in Port of Spain ended Pakistan’s overseas losing streak.

Under the current qualification structure, the top four finishers at the 2027 Qualifiers will earn spots in the World Cup. The West Indies will join a field that typically includes emerging cricket nations and former powerhouses seeking to regain top-tier status.

Regional fans and analysts have called for structural reforms to stabilize player development and scheduling. The requirement to qualify has become a recurring challenge for a consortium that once dominated the sport but has struggled with consistency across formats.

Cricket West Indies said it will finalize its preparation schedule for the qualifiers in the coming weeks, with attention on building depth in batting and maintaining the bowling unit’s recent gains.
