Zavian Harris Named Top Recruit of Course 47

BASSETERRE — Police Constable Zavian Harris was named top recruit of Course 47 of the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force on Thursday, October 8, taking four awards as 28 new officers joined the force at a passing-out ceremony at the Newtown Playing Field.

Harris, who carries police number 500, received the Best Recruit Award from Acting Prime Minister Dr. Geoffrey Hanley. Commissioner of Police James Sutton presented him with the Baton of Honour. He also won the awards for Best Pistol Shot and Best Weapons Training.

Harris credited his success to the mental discipline he developed during six months of police training and to the unwavering support of his mother, Alicia Phillip.

In one of the evening’s most touching moments, Harris invited his mother to the podium during his vote of thanks, embraced her and presented her with a gift basket. Phillip said the surprise left her overwhelmed with emotion.

The mother of six said she initially had concerns about her son’s decision to become a police officer, particularly since another of her sons had recently joined the St. Kitts-Nevis Defence Force. She said she remained committed to supporting his career choice.

Harris said the reality of becoming a police officer was only beginning to sink in. He will start his career in the Traffic Department.

He said he does not know what challenges lie ahead but is determined to give his best and make a positive contribution to the community.
