Six students get scholarships to study at Taiwan universities

BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, JULY 4TH 2012 (CUOPM) – Six students in the Federation have been granted four and five-year scholarships to study at universities in the Republic of China (Taiwan).

Prime Minister the Rt. Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas, Taiwan’s Resident Ambassador to St. Kitts and Nevis, His Excellency Miguel Tsao, Minister of Education, Sen. the Hon. Nigel Carty, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Mrs. Ione Liburd-Willett and President of the Clarence Fitzroy Bryant College (CFBC), Dr. Hermia Morton-Anthony joined the scholarship awardees, their parents and family members at a dinner in their honour.

Ms. Cassandra Ward has been granted a five-year scholarship. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs Taiwan Scholarship allows her to pursue Mandarin for a year at the Mandarin Center of Taiwan. She will study architecture for the remaining four years at the Department of Architecture of National Taipei University of Technology.

ICDF Scholarships have been granted to Mr. Miguel Shevaughn Flemming of Old Road, who will pursue a four-year undergraduate programme in Tropical Agriculture at the National Pingtung University of Science and Technology.

Jermine Mike of Pogson will pursue a four-year International Masters Programme in Environment Sustainable Development at National Central University.

Bevis Gadski Brookes of Lamberts will pursue a two-year International Undergraduate Programme in Mechanical Engineering at Kun Shan University.

Ketricia Finch of Lime Kiln, is to pursue a four-year undergraduate programme in International Trade and Management.

Donya Lynex Francis of St. Paul’s will pursue a four-year undergraduate programme in Journalism and Mass Communication.

In brief remarks, Ambassador Tsao congratulated the students and their parents. He pointed out that the scholarships are due to the untiring work and commitment of Prime Minister the Rt. Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas and Minister of Education, Sen. the Hon. Nigel Carty during visits to Taiwan.

“Tonight we can see the fruits of the visits and the discussions held with our President, our Minister of Foreign Affairs and Minister of Education,” said Ambassador Tsao. Minister of Education Carty urged the students to use the opportunity to work hard and make maximum use of the scholarships.

“I encourage each of you to give this your very best shot, to make us all proud. We are proud of you and we are grateful that you have done what was required to reach thus far,” he said, expressing thanks to Ambassador Tsao and his Government for the good relationship between both countries.

Students Fleming and Ward expressed thanks to the Governments of St. Kitts and Nevis and the Republic of China for the scholarships.

“When I look into the eyes of my fellow recipients, I see not only the joy of being a recipient of a scholarship, but a passion to study and excel. Often times opportunities like these are not taken up because some feel Taiwan is too far from home and we don’t think we can adapt and most of all when the opportunity comes we are not prepared mentally, theoretically to grasp that opportunities. I have a message for my fellow recipients, great men make great sacrifices, because the future belongs to those who are prepared,” said Mr. Fleming who went to thank Prime Minister Douglas, Ambassador Tsao and Minister Carty, Permanent Secretary Willett and CFBC President Anthony and parents for the opportunity.

“We will try our best to do our best. That is what our government here expects and that is what the people of Taiwan as well as officials at the Embassy and our parents expect,” said Ms. Ward.

Speaking on behalf of the parents, Mr. Finch thanked Prime Minister Douglas for his message to use the opportunity to not just better personal situation, but also St. Kitts and Nevis.

“It is very expensive to study and we cannot emphasise how grateful we are as parents that our children have been awarded scholarships to further their studies,” said Mr. Finch.
