Special Session of Cabinet addresses National and Regional Issues

Basseterre, St. Kitts, SKNIS — A special session of the St. Kitts and Nevis cabinet of Ministers was held on Friday (August 28th) in which they were updated on several ongoing projects including the passage of Tropical Storm Erika and the ongoing relief and recovery efforts in Dominica.

Chairman of the Cabinet, Prime Minister, Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris said the agenda was packed and the session was informative and productive.

Prime Minister Harris disclosed that the cabinet was briefed by Carl Herbert, the coordinator of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), on the effects of the passage of Tropical Storm Erika on the Federation. Mr. Herbert also briefed the cabinet on the ongoing efforts in the Commonwealth of Dominica.

“The cabinet was pleased with the progress outlined in a report presented by Minister of Education, the Honourable Shawn Richards,” said Prime Minister Harris. Min Richards was at the time detailing to the cabinet, the preparations for the upcoming school year for students of the Basseterre High School (BHS).

A report from the Sugar Workers Restoration Fund (SWRF) Committee was also on the agenda. The cabinet received a brief that indicated that payments as promised were forthcoming. Prime Minister Harris said, “The cabinet recorded commendation for the members of the committee for their months of sterling yeoman service to the former workers.”

Law and order in the federation was also on the agenda, and Prime Minister Harris in his capacity as Minister of National Security, briefed the cabinet on the ongoing efforts by the law enforcement agencies to stem crime. Prime Minister Harris reported that the downward trend in overall crime continued in July. However there is still concern with regards to murders. He shared with the cabinet a few successes over the months and highlighted ongoing operations and the interdiction of drugs and weapons by the law enforcement agencies.

The session of cabinet ended late Friday evening.
