(ZIZ)– The Early Childhood Development Unit of the Ministry Of Education is celebrating Child Month throughout the month of June, as it has for the past 30 years.

The theme this year is “Child Month at 30—Celebrating Our Achievements.”

Minister of Education and Information, Hon. Nigel Carty, in an address marking the 30th anniversary of Child Month, said this year’s theme is appropriate as the Early Childhood Unit has made significant strides over the years.

“We are asked to pause, look back and focus on how far we have come. This is a fitting theme for the early childhood development unit which is regarded as the leader in early childhood education in the region,” he said. “Just last week the early childhood development unit hosted a regional workshop at the bird rock beach hotel. It was a workshop on “improving access to early child development services.”

Minister Carty then outlined some of the achievements within the early childhood sector.

“It would be remiss of me if I did not focus on some of the remarkable achievement of the last 30 years. These include significant growth in service provision in St. Kitts and Nevis which moved from twelve (12) government centres in 1985 and 27 in 2014; fifteen (15) new government centres have been built since 1995. Just last month a state of the art early childhood centre was opened in St. Paul’s. Funding was provided in a large part by the Republic of China on Taiwan – our partners in education.”

According to Minister Carty, Child Month is celebrated to appreciate the nation’s children and recognize them as valued members of society.
