#4 Back To School Event

Basseterre, St. Kitts, August 31, 2020 (ZIZ News):Dozens of students from Constituency #4 are now better prepared to return to school next week following a School supply distribution event on Sunday organized by Parliamentary representative for the area, the Hon. Lindsay Grant.

The event, which has been held for the past 20 years, was this year held at the Tyrell Williams Primary School.

Minister Grant told ZIZ News that the event is usually part of a larger, more interactive initiative but that had to be scaled back this year.

“Normally what would happen is that we’d have a big fun day for all the children in the area. Bouncing castle, food, drinks, cutting their hair, etc. That’s normally what we do. But as you’d appreciate this year is really a different year because we have the Covid-19 pandemic so what have done really, we have packed all the bags with the pertinent school supplies and we’ll just have the children and the parents come and collect their bags,” he said.

Chairman of PAM Constituency #4, Azard Gumbs said this year’s giveaway is particularly significant in these challenging times.

“Covid-19 has hit a lot of persons and so the spending power of parents, it’s less. And so I think that events such as this, it takes an extra burden off parents as it relates to their children going back to school especially in a time where all of us are suffering from the effects of Covid-19,” he said.

And the parents themselves said they were very grateful for the assistance.

Aside from the school supplies Minister Grant also gave six scholarships of 500 to two students of Bronte Welsh, Tyrell Williams and Verchilds High schools.
