Deadly Guyana Ferry Disaster Under Investigation

Ten bodies have been recovered after a ferry capsized off the coast of Guyana with 133 people on board.

The MV Barima overturned late Saturday while travelling from Georgetown to Port Kaituma in the country’s northwest.

Sixty-seven people, including 15 children, were rescued on Sunday, but dozens remain missing.

Search teams, supported by private sector vessels and divers, have expanded operations across more than one thousand square kilometres.

Authorities are investigating whether an inaccurate passenger list and suspected drug use by members of the crew contributed to the disaster.

The captain and at least one other crew member are in police custody after officials say they tested positive for marijuana.

Prime minister Mark Phillips has also ordered an investigation into possible failures by the authorities.

He says anyone found responsible for negligence or misconduct will face legal action.
