Taiwanese Students Tour Conaree Landfill Recycling Site
BASSETERRE — A group of Taiwanese students touring St. Kitts as part of a cultural exchange visit stopped by the Solid Waste Management Corporation’s (SWMC) landfill this week to learn about the island’s recycling efforts.
The Recycling Project Team walked the students through the operations of the recycling programme, emphasizing the importance of properly sorting recyclable materials such as plastic bottles, aluminum cans, and cardboard. The students also got a hands-on demonstration of how collected materials are compressed and formed into bales for shipment overseas — part of the same process that has helped the landfill cut export costs and pack more material into each shipping container.
The team further showed the students how recycled materials are transformed into new products, including T-shirts and reusable shopping bags, building on donations of similar items previously made to the island through Taiwan’s ongoing environmental partnership with St. Kitts and Nevis.
The visit is the latest chapter in a broader collaboration between Taiwan and St. Kitts and Nevis on recycling and sustainability. Taiwan ICDF has worked closely with local authorities, including the SWMC and the Environmental Department, on a 2026 work plan aimed at expanding recycling infrastructure across the Federation, from new facilities and community collection stations to cardboard recycling capabilities. Taiwanese representatives have also previously donated recycling bins and products made from recycled plastic during events marking milestones in the island’s waste management programme.
Officials say the exchange offered more than a tour — it served as an opportunity for environmental education and knowledge-sharing between the two nations, reinforcing shared efforts toward a more sustainable future for St. Kitts and Nevis.
