Nation Marks Patriotic Day ahead of Independence 43
BASSETERRE — St. Kitts and Nevis will observe National Patriotic Day today, one day ahead of its 43rd anniversary of Independence, with residents encouraged to wear the national colours and fly the flag throughout the day.
Citizens are being asked to don green, yellow, black, red and white and to display the national flag as part of the observance, which falls under this year’s Independence 43 theme, “One People, One Vision, Endless Possibility.”
Friday’s observance is also expected to bring a Patriotic Day Fair, Schools’ Treat and Patriotic Programmes, and a Deputy Governor-General’s Cocktail, rounding out a day built around public displays of national pride ahead of the main independence celebrations.
National Patriotic Day is designed to bring the country together on the eve of Independence Day, which falls Sept. 19 and marks 43 years since St. Kitts and Nevis gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1983. That day’s programme includes the Independence Ceremonial Parade at Warner Park Cricket Stadium in Basseterre, with a parallel ceremony in Charlestown, Nevis, a Toast to the Nation, and the Independence Parade and Awards Ceremony, alongside community events such as the St. George’s Mothers’ Union Breakfast.
Patriotic Day also follows closely on National Heroes Day, observed Sept. 16 at National Heroes Park, where Acting Prime Minister Dr. Geoffrey Hanley delivered the commemorative address honoring the Federation’s five National Heroes — Sir Robert Llewellyn Bradshaw, Sir C.A. Paul Southwell, Sir Joseph Nathaniel France, Sir Simeon Daniel and Dr. Sir Kennedy Simmonds. In his address, Hanley told the nation independence “was never intended to be the conclusion of our national struggle,” a message organizers have tied into the broader spirit of this year’s patriotic observances.
The events form part of a season of Independence 43 programming that has run for weeks, including the “Conversations: Reflections & the Way Forward” dialogue series, rounds of National Colours Days, and the Prime Minister’s Independence Lecture Series, building toward Friday’s display of patriotism and Saturday’s Independence Day ceremonies, parades and community celebrations across both islands.
