Guyana Defence Force Joins Independence 43 Parade

BASSETERRE — National pride was on full display at Warner Park on Saturday as St. Kitts and Nevis celebrated 43 years of Independence with the traditional Independence Ceremonial Parade, one of the signature events of the anniversary season.

Hundreds gathered as the Federation’s security forces and uniformed organizations marched together, joined this year by a special contingent from the Guyana Defence Force.

Members of the St. Kitts-Nevis Defence Force and the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force were joined on the field by personnel from His Majesty’s Prison, Fire and Rescue Services, Customs and other uniformed organizations.

Capt. Jervin Lapsey served as parade commander, returning to the role eight years after he last commanded the Independence Parade.

The visiting Guyana Defence Force contingent marked a first for this year’s ceremony. Officials said their participation reflects growing cooperation between the two countries’ defence forces, following the signing of a Defence and Security Cooperation Agreement in 2025.

Another highlight was the return of Defence Force re-enactors portraying members of the historic 4th West India Regiment.

The Ceremonial Parade formed part of activities marking 43 years since St. Kitts and Nevis gained independence on Sept. 19, 1983. This year’s celebrations are being held under the theme, “One People, One Vision, Endless Possibility: Independence 43.”
