Sugar Boyz Open Nations League with 2-1 Win Over Bonaire
BASSETERRE — St. Kitts and Nevis opened its 2026/27 Concacaf Nations League campaign with a 2-1 victory over Bonaire on Friday, at the SKNFA Technical Center, with Tiquanny Williams scoring twice to lift the hosts to three points in League B, Group C play.
Bonaire struck first, with B. Sonnenschein finding the net in the 7th minute to give the visitors an early lead. St. Kitts and Nevis responded before halftime, with Williams leveling the score in the 36th minute. Williams then delivered the winner in the 89th minute, sealing the result deep into the match.
The Sugar Boyz dominated possession throughout, controlling the ball 68% of the time to Bonaire’s 32%. The hosts also outshot Bonaire on goal attempts, six to four.
The match turned increasingly physical for the visitors, who committed 17 fouls compared to just six for St. Kitts and Nevis. Bonaire picked up two yellow cards and had a player sent off with a red card; St. Kitts and Nevis finished the match without a single card shown.
Williams’ red-hot run continues heading into this international window. In his last domestic outing for MFCR Old Road United Jets, which produced an 8-3 rout of Dieppe Bay, Williams scored six goals himself, in the 5th, 9th, 40th, 43rd, 72nd and 77th minutes. Williams enters the national team fold as the reigning Premier League golden boot winner, having finished last season as the league’s top scorer while leading Old Road to an unbeaten title-winning campaign.
The win gives St. Kitts and Nevis a strong start in Group C, where they next face Grenada on Monday, at the SKNFA Technical Center, before the group shifts to Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, for matches against Cuba on October 2 and 5.
The Concacaf Nations League is an international men’s association football tournament for the 41 member national teams of Concacaf (representing North America, Central America, and the Caribbean).
The Nations League draw, held Thursday, July 23, in Miami, placed St. Kitts and Nevis in League B, Group C alongside Cuba, Grenada and Bonaire. The four-team group is part of a 16-nation League B field split into four groups, with every team playing home-and-away matches against each group opponent across the September-October and November FIFA match windows — six matches per team in total before the four group winners advance to a centralized League B Championship.
The September-October window is the first of three that will decide the 2026/27 Concacaf Nations League, continuing in November 2026 before culminating in March 2027. For League B specifically, the four group winners advance to a centralized League B Championship to determine the league’s champion — a new format for this edition. The overall competition also doubles as a qualifying pathway toward the 2027 Concacaf Gold Cup.
