43 Ghanaian Nurses Arrive in Jamaica
Forty-three specialist nurses from Ghana arrived in Jamaica on Monday, the first group under an agreement to recruit 400 healthcare workers to fill gaps in specialised care at the island’s public health facilities.
The nurses specialise in critical care, paediatrics, emergency care, oncology and mental health. Their arrival marks the start of a wider recruitment effort.
Most will be assigned to the Western and South East Regional Health Authorities. The others will serve in Jamaica’s two remaining health regions and at the University Hospital of the West Indies.
Jamaica’s Health Minister, Dr. Christopher Tufton, said the arrival supports the country’s strategy to stabilise its healthcare workforce.
The four-year agreement was signed this year. It provides for the voluntary recruitment and temporary deployment of Ghanaian health professionals, particularly nurses and doctors.
