Swimmers tackle the Channel

(ZIZ)– Swimmers from around the world were celebrating their achievements on Sunday morning after completing the 2014 Nevis to St. Kitts Cross-Channel Swim.

The race began at Oualie Beach and ended at Reggae Beach.

Casual and competitive swimmers of all ages took part in the event and the big winner was 15 year old Christian Marsden of Trinidad and Tobago.

“I didn’t come really expecting to win the race but I’m very happy that I did.  It was really fun, I had a great time, and the water was really nice.  Nothing like I’ve really swum before but it was really enjoyable and I’d love to come back next year,” he said.

Nevis’ Minister of Sport, Hon Mark Brantley, his wife Mrs Brantley, and Dean of Ross University Jodi Peeler presented the awards to the winners in each age category.

The athletes said they had a great time.

One swimmer, originally from Columbia but living in Nevis was quoted as saying “Amazing, I love it.  Great, yeah everybody should try it.  I’ve been training in Nevis but I really have no experience at all.  So I did this for my family”

The trophies are hand carved from stone and are meant to give the participants a little bit of Nevis to take home with them.
