Police cricket team off to St. Lucia

(ZIZ)– St. Kitts and Nevis would be represented at the third Regional Security System T20 Cricket Tournament when the senior male cricket team of the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force arrives in St. Lucia this evening.

ZIZ news was at the Robert L. Bradshaw International Airport this afternoon [Tuesday] to witness the brief send off ceremony.

While there, we heard from Assistant Commissioner of Police Ian Queeley, who said the tournament is scheduled for April 16th to 22nd. He also gave an overview of the tournament.

“This trip is the brainchild of Commissioner Miller, retired from the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force. The objectives of which are to foster better espirito among police officers in the region and at the same time providing opportunities for greater networking among law enforcement personnel,” Queeley explained.

Former Commissioner of Police Austin Williams is the team’s manager. He too spoke with ZIZ news about the trip, describing it as a great opportunity for the police officers.

“This is a very good day for us. This tournament is in its third season and we are participating for the first time. I am glad that we are going and the guys would get an appreciation and understanding of playing against regional officers, socialising and mingling, away a little bit, from the police world,” Williams said.

Police Officer Percy Daniel, who is a former Leeward Islands cricketer, is accompanying the team in the capacity of coach. He spoke of the training that was done to prepare for the tournament.

“We had what we considered to be a T20 tournament, 10 overs a side. We engaged quite a number of teams and we thought that was, in light of the short notice for the tournament, ideal. We participated in that and we didn’t do as well as we ought to but I think that in light of the ages of some of the players…I think that we prepared ourselves adequately.”

The senior male cricket team is being sponsored by the St. Kitts-Nevis Anguilla National Bank, the Development Bank of St. Kitts-Nevis, LIME and Digicel.
