PM Douglas, delegation and students safe in Taiwan, says Ambassador Huggins

TAIPEI, TAIWAN, MARCH 11TH 2011 (CUOPM) – St. Kitts and Nevis’ Resident Ambassador to the Republic of China on Taiwan, Her Excellency Ms. Jasmine Huggins has informed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Basseterre that the Federation’s Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas and his delegation now on an official visit to Taiwan are safe following the largest earthquake off the coast of Japan.
Ambassador Huggins has also informed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs that nationals of the Federation studying in Taiwan are also safe.
The Embassy further advises that the tsunami warning issued for the coastal areas of Taiwan has been lifted.
The powerful tsunami spawned by the largest earthquake in Japan’s recorded history, slammed the eastern coast, sweeping away boats, cars, homes and people as widespread fires burned out of control.
Ambassador Huggins had informed Prime Minister Douglas that an 8.8 earthquake had struck Japan shortly after he wrapped up a meeting in Kaohsiung City, in the South of Taiwan, with the President of the National Kaohsiung University of Hospitality and Tourism, Dr. Chi-Yeh Yung and other officials.
