Government Seeks Help from UK & USA in Crime Fighting

(ZIZ News) — Prime Minister, the Hon. Dr. Timothy Harris has revealed that the local government is in the process of securing resources from the Government of Taiwan to extend the support of the crime fighting expert team from the United Kingdom, which has been working in the Federation for the past few months.

During the Prime Minister’s Monthly Press Conference on Thursday afternoon, Dr. Harris, who also serves as Minister of National Security, said his government had expanded its reach into the United States to get help with crime solving.

“I must equally say that we have approached the Government of the USA and we have solicited their support in bringing the FBI into St. Kitts and Nevis again to compliment the activities that are taking place,” he said.

David King, of the foreign expertise team, also gave an update on the work to date. He said while there seems to be a crime problem in the country, it has been around for many years.

“We’ve been here now for a couple of months. I first of all need to say that the problems that you’ve got in St. Kitts and Nevis aren’t peculiar to the Caribbean. The problems have manifested themselves roughly since 1999,” he said adding that, “They have not arrived over night and nor would they be solved over night. A lot of this stemmed out of U.S. and U.K. activity in Colombia…back in the 1980s and as a consequence, drug dealers finding different routes and where you find drugs, you find guns and human trafficking that’s affecting the whole of the region, not peculiar to St. Kitts and Nevis.”
